Okay, I don’t do the nude very much on the blog even though I draw it a lot. Many great artworks depicting witches show them nude for several reasons. Witches worshiped naked to have a closer connection with nature around them, to remove obstacles between themselves and magic. The Garderian tradition of Wicca documented and brought nude worship practices to the public eye in the mid 20th century. Critics of Wiccan covens of this time sometimes commented that the religion was only a smoke screen for nudity and lewd behaviors. Nude depictions of witches were also used by more prudish sensibilities as way to show witches as evil and depraved.

Hey there. Taylor & Francis has this service for authors called eprints, i.e. free copies for authors to give round of their article. Since I edit a journal under the T&F umbrella and tend to publish there most often, I have a whole handful of articles with available eprints just sitting around, not getting used.

You know, I was going to gather together a cool little gallery of witches as they’ve been depicted through history. There is a vast array of artwork out there reflecting human belief through the ages. The artwork is as fascinating to me as the diverse and complex beliefs that spawned it.
I hadn’t gotten too far into my collecting when I scaled back to this. This isn’t my favorite piece of art depicting witches or Witches’ Sabbaths. I say that now, and yet the more I look at it, the more it drags me in. It was that little girl in the front (with the withered arms) that got me first. And then as I was scrolling about the enlarged print, those two guys to the far left gave me some heeby jeebies. The detail is amazing; the oddities remind me of Hieronymus Bosch, whose artwork I adore.
