{"id":5203,"date":"2014-11-09T08:39:02","date_gmt":"2014-11-09T13:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theleemsmachine.com\/bean\/?p=5203"},"modified":"2014-09-09T15:36:00","modified_gmt":"2014-09-09T19:36:00","slug":"australia-love-from-afar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theleemsmachine.com\/bean\/blog\/2014\/11\/09\/australia-love-from-afar\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia &#8211; love from afar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello there, lovers of the strange and unusual.\u00a0 There is no place better to find strange and unusual than Australia and I&#8217;ve picked out a few examples of evolutionary diversion to share with you today.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 358px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/c\/c5\/Southern_Hairy-nosed_Wombat.jpg\/1024px-Southern_Hairy-nosed_Wombat.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"265\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat CC BY 2.0 | Jason Pratt &#8211; originally posted to Flickr as Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wombat\">Wombats<\/a> captured my attention since I first saw one falling through a broken deck chair in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0111201\/\"><em>Sirens<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 I find them laughably cute.\u00a0 They are one of many marsupials that call Australia home.\u00a0 In fact, 70% of the 334 marsupial species in the world are found in Australia, near by New Guinea and surrounding islands (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marsupial\">Wikipedia<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The strangeness of marsupials (what with half developed embryos crawling around on their parents) pales in comparison to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Platypus\">Platypus.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 With a duck bill, beaver-like tail, and eyes like a hagfish or lampry, this egg laying mammal takes the prize for best animal mash-up, but that&#8217;s not all of the strangeness.\u00a0 The Platypus hunts by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electroreception\">electroreception<\/a>, similar to sharks, has venom, and lacks a stomach.<\/p>\n<p>Though not specific to Australia, flying foxes also make there home down under.\u00a0 They are also known as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pteropus\">mega bats<\/a> and can have wings spans up to 2 meters or 6 feet.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5FK9tWT5pA4\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Not to be outdone by warm bloods, the trees of Australia are equally strange.\u00a0 A stand of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lagarostrobos\">Huon Pine trees <\/a>in Western Tasmania are an all male clone colony in excess of 10,500 years.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s like the Dr. Who of trees, never sexually partnered and constantly living in new bodies of itself.\u00a0 Though not of Australia I&#8217;d be remiss if I did not mention Pando, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pando_%28tree%29\">Trembling Giant<\/a> in Utah, a clonal colony of quaking aspen.<\/p>\n<p>Where clone trees are cool and all (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.todayifoundout.com\/index.php\/2010\/06\/commercial-banana-plants-are-perfect-clones-of-one-another\/\">banana<\/a> lovers everywhere owe their thanks), danger is much more exciting!\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.australiangeographic.com.au\/topics\/science-environment\/2009\/06\/gympie-gympie-once-stung,-never-forgotten\/\">Gympie Gympie tree <\/a>will sting you.\u00a0 It will burn you like a chemical Moriarty if you so much as brush lightly past and then it will revisit you with burning sensation over the course of years, like some horrible tactile acid flashback.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello there, lovers of the strange and unusual.\u00a0 There is no place better to find strange and unusual than Australia and I&#8217;ve picked out a few examples of evolutionary diversion to share with you today.
