{"id":5053,"date":"2014-02-26T15:39:44","date_gmt":"2014-02-26T20:39:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theleemsmachine.com\/bean\/?p=5053"},"modified":"2014-02-26T15:39:44","modified_gmt":"2014-02-26T20:39:44","slug":"shelf-life-2005-imdb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theleemsmachine.com\/bean\/blog\/2014\/02\/26\/shelf-life-2005-imdb\/","title":{"rendered":"Shelf Life (2005) &#8211; IMDb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0468546\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theleemsmachine.com\/bean\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/MV5BMTQyMDk3NzQyOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTc4MDM3MQ@@._V1_SY317_CR50214317_.jpg\" width=\"214\" height=\"317\" \/><\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0468546\/\"><em>Shelf Life<\/em> (2005) <\/a>arrived in our mailbox a while ago.\u00a0 I had added it to our queue ages agon and had since forgotten exactly what it was about.\u00a0 In the meantime, both Richard and I developed the idea that the film was foreign and subtitled.\u00a0 I specifically developed the idea that the film was Korean.<\/p>\n<p>These aren&#8217;t the reasons why we avoided putting the disc in the player and instead chose movie after movie, including plenty of subtitled Korean movies, to watch instead.\u00a0 Eventually, we decided to get it over with and just watch the thing.<\/p>\n<p>I remember that I wanted to see this in the same way I am interested in all movies and TV shows about libraries and librarians.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a weird introspective, self mocking, others mocking type of enjoyment I get from depictions of these people and places.\u00a0 AND BOY DOES THIS MOVIE DELIVER!\u00a0 Sorry I had to shout.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0468546\/\"><em>Shelf Life<\/em><\/a> is not Korean, nor is it subtitled.\u00a0 It is a stark, yet funny, slow starting, acerbic look at small library hierarchy and personalities.\u00a0 It reminds me of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0934744\/\">The Librarians<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 It is less big laughs than small furtive, guilty chuckles (at least for me), and it is utterly impossible to stop watching.<\/p>\n<p>It starts like a quite school assignment production with the characters awkwardly exchanging dialog and then it grabs your attention with a fishhook to your face (not literally).\u00a0 Suddenly you are wrapped up in the mystery of an unfolding story of miscommunication, misconception, quick judgements and terribly questionable human behavior.\u00a0 This is love, ladies and gentlemen.\u00a0 Though, I have to admit, not the marrying kind of love.
