{"id":1474,"date":"2012-06-01T12:53:12","date_gmt":"2012-06-01T16:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theleemsmachine.com\/bean\/?p=1474"},"modified":"2012-06-01T09:06:34","modified_gmt":"2012-06-01T13:06:34","slug":"your-brain-on-your-computer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theleemsmachine.com\/bean\/blog\/2012\/06\/01\/your-brain-on-your-computer\/","title":{"rendered":"Your brain on your computer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How did I not know about this?\u00a0 Years moaning over the inability to affix tags and notes to word and excel documents to make file browsing more coherent.\u00a0 Years of making lists and documenting and organizing my creative pursuits in unwieldy Microsoft folder systems. \u00a0 How did I not know or even consider that someone with more code intelligence than I had already tackled the problem?\u00a0 HOW?<\/p>\n<p>Can you tell I&#8217;m broken up about this?\u00a0 I am both frustrated and excited.\u00a0 So this is how it works.\u00a0 Somehow, in the midst of looking for something else I found <a href=\"http:\/\/code4lib.org\/irc\">code {4} lib<\/a>.\u00a0 And I thought, &#8216;Wow, this is a fabulous online journal on stuff I&#8217;m professionally interested in, in speak that&#8217;s a little over my head&#8217; &#8211; which translates to: learn new things LeEtta, go go go! \u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/code4lib.org\/irc\">code {4} lib<\/a> is also a blog, conference, community and listserv.\u00a0 I promptly subscribed to the listserv because I could find no other way to feed information from <a href=\"http:\/\/code4lib.org\/irc\">code {4} lib<\/a> into my head and I didn&#8217;t want it to be forgotten in my plethora of bookmarks.<\/p>\n<p>The listserv lead me to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebrain.com\/\">The Brain<\/a> -a mind mapping software that allows for mapping and organizing files and thoughts, interrelating those thoughts, adding notes and tags to those thoughts, and finally, making everything searchable.\u00a0 It&#8217;s fabulous.\u00a0 The introductory webinar recording (oh, and they have live webinar question\/answer sessions weekly), mentioned a few other products.\u00a0 One of these was <a href=\"http:\/\/freemind.sourceforge.net\/wiki\/index.php\/Main_Page\">FreeMind <\/a>&#8211; an open source and free mind mapping software.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/freemind.sourceforge.net\/wiki\/index.php\/Main_Page\">FreeMind<\/a> is also nice enough to<a href=\"http:\/\/freemind.sourceforge.net\/wiki\/index.php\/Main_Page#Alternatives_to_using_FreeMind\"> list out alternatives<\/a> so I&#8217;m not going to go into them here.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m thinking of trying out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebrain.com\/\">The Brain<\/a>&#8216;s free version\/trial.\u00a0 It looks a little more like what I wanted to do with my filing system to make it more navigable.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m kind of inspired by <a href=\"http:\/\/freemind.sourceforge.net\/wiki\/index.php\/Main_Page\">FreeMind<\/a>&#8216;s 2D-ness.\u00a0 It would&#8217;ve been indispensable when I was trying to map out a choose your own adventure story.\u00a0 That was a clunky challenge.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got another one in the works, so&#8230;I will explore.\u00a0 And, I&#8217;ll probably report back.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How did I not know about this?\u00a0 Years moaning over the inability to affix tags and notes to word and excel documents to make file browsing more coherent.\u00a0 Years of making lists and documenting and organizing my creative pursuits in unwieldy Microsoft folder systems. \u00a0 How did I not know or even consider that someone&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/theleemsmachine.com\/bean\/blog\/2012\/06\/01\/your-brain-on-your-computer\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Your brain on your computer<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[33],"tags":[73,80,47,119],"class_list":["post-1474","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog","tag-librarians","tag-programing","tag-projects","tag-software"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"jetpack-related-posts":[{"id":10436,"url":"https:\/\/theleemsmachine.com\/bean\/blog\/2022\/12\/06\/fruitcake-murder-poison-theft\/","url_meta":{"origin":1474,"position":0},"title":"Fruitcake:  murder, poison, theft","author":"leems","date":"December 6, 2022","format":false,"excerpt":"I have an unfinished project tracking fruitcake recipes through newspaper clippings that calls to me.
